After going through 5 main negative mindsets and understanding how they hold us back on our path to progress, we are back again to positive mindsets which help us progress further in our lives. While negative mindsets are those we should ideally remove form ourselves, positive mindsets that help us should be added to our own approach to get better success and results.
Consider every interaction with another human being as an experience. At work, your colleagues, seniors and clients and personally your friends and family. In the current times, most relationships are transactional. We all stay ‘knitted-together’ till we are mutually useful. This of course applies more in the world of work where we are like parts of a machine which make it work. Having a ‘Value Add mindset’ is all about naturally adding value to the other person, a work process or business relationships. The term value add appeared in Economics in 1930, but by the 1990s this term spread in business management and leadership. Today its used commonly. Clients use this term to describe how you have enhanced ideas, concepts and added new perspectives for better business success. How do you wire yourself to look at adding weight to an idea or even a process constantly? How do you evolve to a ‘Value Add mindset’?
Understand the purpose of your role
Purpose is the most mature guiding light in anything you do. Its like a map which crystallises your direction and the defined results you are expected to get. Once you understand the purpose of your role in alignment with your organisational goals you have set out on the right path. You are now aware for example that the climate where you are going to will be cold and you carry your woollens! That’s half the battle won. Once you understand the purpose of your role see where you can add value by exceeding expectations meaningfully. The core of this mindset is being dynamic, questioning, curious and enthusiastic to improve, enhance and see things with a drone vision!
Go that extra mile
This attitude is the cornerstone of a ‘Value Add mindset’. Never settle for mediocrity through your role journey. Be strategic, only then can you really value add. Think beyond, always check relevance, be gap conscious. To do more you will need to dig deeper than the others. Research deep, on competition, the domain and map trends. You cannot add value till you are thorough. Cosmetic value add just negates your depth quotient. Success is never forever and what anyone does yesterday becomes outdated even before you can bat an eyelid. Always ride the waves of change and you will see many ways to improve, do more and add more real value.
Boost your human connect
Its all about how you communicate, how you send out your message and what gets decoded and it all begins with your human connect. Creating connect is not easy. It’s a mix of affability, likeability and reliability. There is however one common glue that can connect. Genuineness, passion and commitment towards a common goal or purpose. In a business relationship you form a human connect through your energy and enthusiasm to get things done. The more there are repeated moments of truth, the more mutual trust gets built. As you value add, time after time you form a chain of reliability and affinity. It becomes like playing mixed doubles. You become a formidable joint force to win the match together.
Doing it better
To sum up, this is a mindset which automatically presses the magic button for you to ‘Do it better’. Value add means that you care enough to do your best! Look again at anything and question yourself, how could this have been better? You will find multiple areas for improvement. When you do this to what has been given to you to do, you value add and possess a ‘Value Add mindset’!
