The Two Core Mindsets That Make Us What We Are

POSTED BY: Amitesh Banerjee 12 October 2026

As you know, that we are all born with what we call as our nature. As we grow, we are either known as happy babies or wingy babies. When we learn to walk and start going to pre school we are described by our behaviour. Either we are known to be quiet and to ourselves, or noisy and aggressive, obedient or disobedient and so on. This nature of ours develops as we grow based on our experiences of life and then our behaviour is seen as a reflection of our mindset. – (Author)

In this weekly column named ‘Destination Mindset’ it’s been a deep dive into existing mindsets of different types as well as quick evolution paths to better and more effective mindsets. We have discussed negative mindsets and how to devolve from them, also how you do your own mindset audit, create your mindset cultivation strategy and implement this strategy successfully to evolve to a new set of behaviours and reactions making you more acceptable and successful in your personal and professional lives.

At the end of it all there are two core mindsets that make us what we are and what we become.

The two core mindsets

The concept of growth and fixed mindsets was coined by psychologist Carol Dweck in her 2006 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Someone with a growth mindset views intelligence, abilities, and talents as learnable and capable of improvement through effort. On the other hand, someone with a fixed mindset views those same traits as inherently stable and unchangeable over time. – Catherine Cote

Essentially therefore there are these two core mindsets that a human being possesses. A lot of us possess a fixed mindset which makes us inflexible. We believe only in what we have learnt and are not readily open to learn new ways, explore or experiment. This makes us stunted and live within ourselves!

How does a growth mindset help?

A growth mindset matters because it changes how you respond to challenges, turning setbacks into tools for learning rather than proof that you lack talent. Fostering a growth mindset and resilient attitude is a good way to combat procrastination, feelings of imposter syndrome, and other negative emotions that can impact our mental health. By having a growth mindset, you are more likely to take on challenging tasks and succeed at them because you are more willing to try new strategies or increase your effort than those with a fixed mindset. – (Author Stanford University)

A growth mindset therefore becomes the right mindset choice to evolve to especially in the world we live in and work in today, where change is the ever constant and overcoming challenges is the norm of survival.

How do you evolve to a growth mindset?

‘Nothing is impossible’ is the attitude you need to start with as evolution to the growth mindset is difficult. The more you reside in the fixed mindset, the tougher it becomes to evolve to the growth mindset. The techniques are the same as explained in my earlier articles. The first step which I call ‘look before you jump’ is to do a self-audit, endorsed by a group of family and well wishers who will give you a feeler of where you are in the fixed to growth mindset. Then once you know it will work, step forward with complete enthusiasm and resolve. – (Author)

The first jump is to get into a mind frame of positivity and confidence to achieve and progress. Drive away all negativity and pessimistic qualities you possess. Remain aware and logical though. If and when you stumble and fall, take all failures and challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. Understand and develop goals which you need to achieve and imbibe them in the way you live and work. Be patient, good things do not just happen, you must make things happen.

Not just watch things happen!

“The expert in anything was once a beginner.” — Helen Hayes
