Teamwork makes the dream work- the team player mindset

Whether you look back at how pyramids were built or how cricket matches are won, you will understand the importance of teams in business. Teams are a powerful force multiplier. Take any task, teams can achieve way more than an individual can, provided everyone is committed and has a clear understanding of the task at hand and its purpose. Look at competitive business pitches, and most pitches as you know have deadlines, which starts with researching and building the pitch and ending with a purpose led road map with commercials. Different teams are set up to complete the pitch and then deliver the pitch. The success of any organisation depends on team work. The essence of teams is the mindset of every team member. It’s much less ‘I’ and much more ‘we’. The key of a winning team is collective success. The team player mindset helps boosts your ability to work together and succeed. Everyone aims at leading teams. But to be a successful team leader you need to comprehend what creates the magic of working in teams first. It begins first with you and your own team player mindset.

How do you develop a team player mindset?

Human beings are naturally wired to be self centred and look at doing things around themselves. A team player mindset starts to develop when you see the team as your own extension. Team wins become more important than your own wins. Your approach needs to become more collaborative instead of being competitive. There are a few steps you need to take consciously. Genuinely look at team interest first. Understand and respect the skills and roles of your fellow team members, do your own role as your best self but be open to receiving help and generously helping others. Get to know your team members, their strengths and weaknesses but also bond together as a team with a common purpose.

How do you lead your team?

Teams are set up either as projects or functionally. Today even domain wise. All these teams in an organisation have their leaders and these leaders have their chain of command going all the way up to the top management. Team leaders have their own duties to perform in leading the team as well as contributing towards the team and the organisation. The key of a successful team leader today is how you handle your people. Most employees do not leave organisations. They leave their toxic bosses. Stop being a boss, instead be a coach who provides solutions and solves problems. Create a work oriented environment where your team members are able to work as a cohesive team. Lead as a hands on professional who embodies the purpose of the organisation one, who knows the way and shows the way. Your energy must inspire others to be as energetic or even more.

Cultivate positive team bonding

Great performers blossom in a positive work environment. Employees must feel a sense of belonging to the organisation and your team. Research has shown that in the post pandemic era emotion is a strong driver. Your employee must believe in the purpose of the organisation but also feel a strong sense of belonging. Schedule team building and bonding activities, celebrate every success, and recognise performers. Welcome new suggestions and ideas; create a supportive work environment where everyone’s point of view is important. People today love to feel wanted and love to win. Above everything create an environment of fun, positivity and happiness. Only then will people come happily to their workplaces. As you will surely know many office colleagues remain friends for decades. Team bonding goes a long way. I have seen people help other team members to gleam up their work. It stops to matter who does it as long as the team or organisation wins!
