The Power of Consistent Goals: Why Every Leader Needs these 5 Anchors

POSTED BY: Dr. Ankoor Dasguupta 04 September 2025

As an executive coach and someone who has spent decades in advertising and media, I’ve witnessed a paradox that leaders across industries face: they achieve remarkable short-term milestones, yet often find themselves adrift in the larger narrative of their own lives. In boardrooms and in branding, one truth remains universal—clarity and consistency of purpose create enduring impact. Just as a brand becomes iconic through consistent messaging, a leader becomes influential through consistent goals.

In this context, I advocate for identifying and sustaining 5 most consistent goals in life, that guide decisions, balance priorities, and preserve authenticity amidst constant change.

  1. Goals Provide Stability in a Volatile World

The modern business ecosystem is defined by volatility—economic swings, geopolitical uncertainty, and disruptive technologies like AI constantly reshaping the playing field. In such an environment, a leader without consistent goals resembles a brand without positioning: reactive, fragmented, and vulnerable.

Having five consistent goals—whether around health, relationships, wealth creation, contribution, or personal mastery—acts as an internal compass. They stabilise decision-making and create continuity when external variables shift. I’ve seen senior leaders in advertising campaigns shift budgets overnight due to market shocks, but those with clear personal goals made sharper, less stressful choices because their anchors never moved.

Example: During the 2008 financial crisis, leaders who maintained consistent goals on “financial prudence” and “ethical growth” navigated not just their companies but also their personal lives with resilience, while others crumbled under short-term panic.

  1. Consistency Builds Credibility and Legacy

In branding, repetition isn’t redundancy—it’s reinforcement. Nike’s “Just Do It” works because it’s consistent across decades. Similarly, leaders who demonstrate consistent goals project credibility and inspire trust. For C-suite executives, trust is currency.

When your teams see you prioritising the same five goals over time, they perceive you as authentic, reliable, and values-driven. This fosters loyalty, mitigates attrition, and enhances influence beyond organisational boundaries.

Sharing a personal experience: Early in my media career, I decided my five anchors included “continuous learning.” Despite being in leadership, I enrolled in courses, attended workshops, and publicly shared my learnings with teams. This consistency not only boosted my credibility but also inspired younger colleagues to embrace lifelong learning. Over years, that consistent goal became part of my leadership legacy.

  1. Five Goals Create Balance—Not Burnout

C-suite leaders often mistake ambition for balance. They set 50 goals, chase 20 initiatives, and eventually burn out. The discipline of having just five consistent goals forces prioritisation and balance. It prevents the common trap of over-commitment while ensuring that diverse aspects of life—professional success, personal growth, family, societal contribution, and health—receive deliberate attention.

Metaphor: Imagine your five goals as the legs of a table. If one leg weakens, the entire table wobbles. But if all five remain sturdy, the table supports the weight of any challenge.

  1. Goals Reinforce Strategic Thinking

Strategy is as much about saying “no” as it is about saying “yes.” Consistent goals sharpen a leader’s ability to filter noise from opportunity. For instance, if one of your five goals is “sustainable innovation,” then you won’t be easily swayed by high-return but environmentally damaging ventures.

For instance, in the advertising industry, I once advised a client tempted to chase a viral but ethically questionable campaign. Their CEO’s consistent goal of “responsible branding” led them to decline. Months later, a competitor’s short-sighted campaign backfired, while this brand gained respect for its values. Strategic restraint, anchored in consistent goals, became their advantage.

  1. Consistency Enhances Personal Fulfillment

For global leaders, success is often measured in quarterly results and market share. Yet personal fulfillment—what allows leaders to sustain their performance over decades—derives from alignment with consistent goals.

When the five most consistent goals in your life mirror your deepest values, success feels whole, not hollow. I’ve coached executives who climbed to the top but felt empty because their actions contradicted their values. Conversely, leaders who consciously defined and lived their five consistent goals experienced peace alongside performance.

Personal Reflection: One of my consistent goals is “to contribute knowledge generously.” Whether through mentoring, writing, or coaching, living this goal has brought me immense fulfillment—beyond the accolades of media awards or business achievements. It’s what keeps my energy renewable. Today, being an ICF accredited PCC, I am bringing my purpose alive.

Moving from Intention to Practice

It’s not enough to define these five consistent goals; leaders must operationalise them. Here’s how:

  1. Define Clearly – Frame each goal in a way that is measurable and values-aligned. For example, instead of “health,” articulate it as “sustain fitness to run two marathons every year.”
  2. Communicate Transparently – Share your goals with trusted teams, boards, or mentors. Visibility breeds accountability.
  3. Review Annually – Circumstances evolve, but the essence should remain stable. Revisit and refine, without abandoning the core.
  4. Integrate into Leadership Decisions – Allow your five goals to influence hiring, partnerships, and culture. This creates coherence between personal and professional life.
  5. Track Progress, Not Perfection – Success lies in sustained pursuit, not flawless execution.

Reflection

In leadership, just like in advertising, clarity wins. A brand cannot be everything to everyone, and neither can a leader. By grounding yourself in five most consistent goals, you move from reacting to the market to shaping it, from temporary wins to lasting impact.

Your five goals are not mere aspirations; they are your leadership architecture. They will dictate how you are remembered—not as someone who chased everything but as someone who anchored deeply, led authentically, and lived fully. And ultimately, leadership is about the stories we leave behind.
