Olympian Reveals How Purpose-Driven Inner Stories Shape Triumphs and Resilience
#PRAXIS12 brought to the stage an unforgettable keynote by Heena Sidhu, Olympian and India’s first pistol shooter to become World No. 1. Her session, titled “May My Story Be an Inspiration,” was a moving reflection on the power of inner stories – the narratives we tell ourselves – and how they shape performance, reputation & resilience.
Heena began with a moment that changed her life: the 2013 ISSF World Cup. She had qualified but failed to achieve a medal rank. Fate, however, had other plans. Just two days before the World Cup, one athlete dropped out, and she got a second chance — though even that wasn’t simple. Visa troubles almost kept her away, but she persevered and made it to Zurich.
On match day, she fought her way to the finals, only to find herself at the bottom of the leaderboard, staring at elimination. But in that moment, she shared, she was completely immersed in the game, shutting out all distractions. And when it came time for the gold medal shot, she took it – and won!!
That moment didn’t just make history – it made Heena Sidhu a household name. She became the first Indian pistol shooter to reach World No. 1 in 2014, putting India on the global shooting map. But as she confessed to the PRAXIS audience, there was more to the story: “My outer story was one of triumph, but my inner story was that I did not belong.”
This contradiction, she said, became a turning point in her life. The gold medal opened doors to many more victories, but it also forced her to examine the narrative running inside her head. “This was the power of internal communication,” she explained. “But my inner story was working against me – and that had to change.”
Linking her personal journey to the world of communications, Heena pointed out that strong narratives sustain performance, not just in sports, but in business. “Resilience is built on purpose-driven stories,” she said. “It keeps you learning, evolving, and staying in the game.”
She stressed that change is survival in sports, and successful change begins with powerful storytelling – the same lesson PR professionals use every day. Extending a compliment to the audience, she said, “As PR professionals, what you do is impressive. Stories do more than shape your reputation – they create value.”
“You are a shining light for women’s sports,” said Reegal Ranjan, Value 360 Communications in a conversation with Heena and questioned – has there been a moment when resilience was your biggest friend? The answer came in a systematic, well thought-out manner. She felt resilience is a “silent struggle” and is built on three things – acceptance, adaptability and you must have a strong purpose in life.
And, she also spoke candidly about the challenges of travel, pressure, and expectations.
Her journey to winning medals was long and successful, but if there was ever a feeling that it was too much, she highlighted the fact that there was the challenge of travel which was not easy. “It’s always easier when you are an underdog,” she confessed.
And how did communication shape her story? She credited communication (both internal and external) having played a key part of her journey. “Everyone has a unique story, and we must tell that story,” she concluded, leaving the audience inspired.
Her talk was more than just an athlete’s story – it was a reminder that whether in sports or communications, the right narrative is the key to winning.
