Mastering The Message

POSTED BY: Sarika Chavan 06 November 2025

It’s truly inspiring when someone takes the effort to educate and help grow the public relations profession. Books dedicated to PR are rare, and Mastering the Message stands out as a valuable contribution to the field.

The author, Ganapathy Vishwanathan, a seasoned communication professional with decades of experience across public relations, media, and academia, has written this book for the next generation of PR practitioners – those keen to understand what truly happens on the ground.

Having co-authored books that capture the stories of pioneers and professionals in the profession, I appreciate how Mastering the Message complements those works. While the  books I worked on focuses on real-life journeys and case studies, Ganapathy’s book delves into the nuances of PR, weaving in anecdotes, insights, and examples from his own experience.

What makes this book special is that it goes beyond theory or jargon – it offers real, practical learning for students and young professionals eager to understand the art and science of communication.

The book features praise from advertising veterans like late Piyush Pandey and Ambi Parameswaran, a testament to how deeply public relations influences today’s world of communication and brand building.

What Does the Book Cover?

The book brings together structured learning and grounded insights that form a strong foundation in PR. What I particularly liked is how the book is structured around the evolution of public relations, offering both a historical lens and practical lessons for today’s communicators. Each part deep dives into a specific area – from media relations and managing talent to storytelling, research, and emerging trends. The final section, The Next Wave, explores how data, AI, social media, and measurement are shaping the future of communication.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Storytelling – Storytelling in PR isn’t just about evoking emotion. It must be anchored in data and real-world examples that reinforce the message and lend it authenticity and credibility.
  2. Planning in PR – Planning in PR still lacks a clearly defined and independent function. While it exists, it often remains unstructured and intuitive, with limited use of behavioural insights, cultural mapping, or emotional drivers. As a result, planning in PR continues to be a largely underdeveloped area within the profession.
  3. Talent Management – Talent management continues to be a challenge in the PR profession. Individuals need to take the initiative to share their success stories and career journeys, as “PR for PR” is essential to showcase the value and potential of the profession itself in different forums.

What’s In It for Me?

For me, this book is a refresher of everything I learnt at XIC and through my professional journey. It beautifully brings together the fundamentals, insights, and real-world learnings that one needs to build a strong foundation in public relations.

My Recommendation

Mastering the Message is a must-read for anyone looking to build a strong foundation in public relations and understand how thoughtful communication can truly shape reputation and relationships.
