Introduction: Electronic media have emerged in a big way in communicating to public in a big way. These media are radio and TV and are big in number in India and other countries like USA. Arvind Singhal and EM Rogers say public sector TV revolution was on in their book Indias information Revolution. We had Doordarshan launching Ramayana and Mahabharatha serials during late 1980s and Maggi Noodles sponsoring them in big way. After cable has started in 1992 or afterwards Doordarshan lost advertisements to Sun TV. Sun TV gets about Rs 3000 crores or more in advertisements and other networks get lesser. Mega serials are run now and are attracting huge advertisement revenues.
Electronic media are highly developed in the US and acr radios are more popular there. Cable came into US very early and serials as Dallas Dynasty have been attracting audiences in a big way. The Presidential debates in the US between candidates are watched by more than 90 million and four networks of ABC CBS and NBC also Fox attract more people, Reagan emerged more popular president during 1980s as he mastered art of speaking on TV. Recent debate between Joe Biden and Trump was seen heavily and it showed media can make or mar candidates chances in elections.
Radio has big history as it was started by Lionel Feldon in 1927 in British India and it was named as Akash Vani after independence. Radio has AM and FM stations and in 2002 Radio Mirchi Suriyan FM and all have come into being. Radio songs and youth programs dramas and others attract audiences in a big way.
TV mega serials as Sun TV’s Chithi Kolangal attracted huge audiences and have won ratings in a big way. Ratings is one point means something like 10000 households or audiences and advertisers want big ratings to attract people for a TV show. If a show attracts audiences, it will get big advertisers and be on air for long time.
Electronic media have gone into private after Janatha party won in 1977 and a committee was formed under Verghese to study autonomy. Autonomy was granted very much later and today public corporation was constituted called Prasar Bharathi for AIR and Doordarshan.
Indira Gandhi launched SITE communication experiment in 1975 with US NASA collaboration and 2500 villages covered and four hours of TV programs were shown two and half hours of educational and one and half hours of entertainment programs were telecast. This experiment was a great success and used ATS -6 satellite and 6 states focusing central India and around were covered
Indira Gandhi when she won second term in 1980 did not touch press and let it be free and Rajiv Gandhi also did more or less same during his regime. Indira Gandhi had visited actor Amitabh Bacchan in hospital after an accident in shooting and Amitabh contested from Allahabad during Rajiv Gandhi period won by wider margin. He resigned later for unknown reasons.
PM Modi is on TV and his developmental messages are being broadcast well. Indias cooperation with west increased during PM Modis regime and broadcasting should also be included in this.
TV and Radio continue to motivate all and entertainment content is more and it is well needed After days of hard work people used to watch movies and it is being shifted to TV. Like American TV Indian TV is more interesting and contains good content of culture and education need to do same in future also.
