Media management has been changing and it is acquiring new dimension now a days Family-owned media also operates as well as professionally run media houses also exist. Media houses need to run efficiently to serve people’s interest effectively today
Management principles are staffing directing planning controlling and communication. This applied to media houses and enterprises also. Media management is getting to be professionally run and men and women manage positions in media. Media management is managing a newspaper or magazine or broadcast media and things of that kind. Government or public cooperates media as Prasar Bharathi controls Radio and TV in India and it is a public corporation.
Media have several ways of operating and RNI in India gives permit to open a newspaper or magazine. Newspapers are operating and some close soon due to lack of subscribers or advertisers or difficulty in getting newsprint or some such. There is a competition among newspapers and magazines in India
Take for example Madras has the Hindu and Times of India as major papers. Hindu dominated the scene for some time as Indian express was a weak competitor to it. Times of India when it started its edition poses big threat to the Hindu for advertisements and subscriptions. Both are conservative and pro establishment oriented used to support even British also when they were ruling. This competition has made both papers to be on watch for advertisements and subscriptions badly. Deccan Chronicle is no match either to the Hindu or Times of India.
Pressure from ruling parties and states also affect newspaper management. This is not so much since the country is committed to democratic system and press is relatively free. The Central and state governments still intervene in press freedom and affect functioning of media and press. News print supplies and advertisement support all plague even big papers and media but no way is found for media and press to get away from such pressures.
Media management is professional because India is a competitive country and education is valued very much. Qualified journalist appointments are made beside ones writing skills and other skills as public speaking skills. But journalists and media persons have not seen many goods from either media owners or government because there is no such guaranty on salary and other perks offered to them. Salary has not risen greatly and it is depended on merits and how society regards media men compared to other professions. Governments promised good salaries and pay scales but have not been implemented for several reasons.
Media management has been changing as technology has come into news rooms and great changes are taking place. Women have entered into journalism as it is glamorous and scope for creativity is there. Good opportunity to shine for qualified people exist as it attracts science graduates and engineers alike
Top level media management exists as big industrialists and corporations own media and newspapers. Hindu is owned by N Ram and his brothers and the Hindustan Times is owned by Birla group – KK Birla. Such ownership restricts media freedom sometimes bowing to pressure from big businesses and government.
Media management is changing as professionalism is on and qualified graduates take job positions in a big way as technology has also stepped in. More good news is coming as market is growing and more revenues are pouring in to media now a days. It is a good career to venture into for new professional graduates in coming days
