The Goal Centered Mindset

In any discipline and domain especially in 2025, work has moved to measurement of returns, especially in professional services. Every PR consultancy is paid based on the scope of work and deliverables report. In the corporate world, it’s based on role description and goals. This includes professionals in the world of corporate communications. Continuity depends on agreed deliverables, success is based on desired impact, not just hours of mindless work. Growth depends on tangible extraordinary results. To ensure success and client delight you need to evolve to a goal centred mindset, where you exceed your expected deliverables to goals and pursue to achieve them with the highest impact.

Here are some easy steps to evolve to the goal centred mindset

Set your mind

Any change of mindset needs conditioning to adapt to major changes in the way you think, behave or act. At outset gauge your readiness and ability to change for long term. I have mentioned this before but would like to repeat again that it’s not easy to change the way you are naturally wired. So, before you jump into the deep end of the pool check your ability to swim and survive. I would even advise here that being goal centred is extremely difficult as it requires double focus and much more hard work. There are no miracles in mindset upgradation. Check out with close friends or family and get feedback from them. There is no turning back once you jump off the cliff, so set your mind and go ahead with determination and positivity. It’s possible!

Realistic self-SWOT

Appoint a change buddy who can guide you genuinely, real time. This is because other than monks most human beings have wrong perceptions about themselves. You need to really wake up and smell the coffee in its real sense. Jot down your inbuilt abilities and strengths to achieve the goal centred mindset. Then list out what are your qualities of weakness to achieve this mindset. What other strengths do you need to add so that you progress well? How do you eliminate your weaknesses practically so that they do not become hurdles on your path. Thereafter what opportunities lie ahead which you could achieve? These will inspire your goal setting. Then of course managing the threats you can spot to get there.

Self-goal strategic roadmap

After you have consciously decided to take a positive and real leap to evolve to a goal setting mindset, and have done a realistic self SWOT the time arrives to create a self-goal strategic roadmap. This road map should be detailed with review and milestones with a ‘do not abandon’ red light. Ensuring that there are no disruptions in your normal work and life routine, you should share this road map with your change buddy and align to see that it’s not too ambitious. Real sustainable change takes its own time, like a good cake takes time to bake. These are your personal goals to evolve to a new goal centred mindset, so let’s not confuse them with the actual professional goals you will set once you reach your goal of evolution to your new mindset

Setting your professional goals

Professional goal setting just does not start with your job description. You really need to research what is beyond the words and the lines. Job descriptions are basically a summary of what is expected of you, so in the environment today where change is the only constant, it great to start off by having a role and expectations discussion with your immediate superior and actually what the priorities are. Then list your goals accordingly. This is beyond the normal new employee induction programme. For a PR consultancies, SOW is just a list of tactics. The why and the who really matters the most. Things will surely be different and more positive with your new goal centred mindset!
