I ended the first part of the Growship mindset article with this quote “It’s time to evolve leadership into what I call growship, a leadership style powered by the growth mindset.” Filomena Di Luise Forbes Councils Member. And now to continue with the second and concluding part. But Growship has no conclusion. It is a contagious and continuous process, almost like the sea which is ever changing. With its low and high tides. But let’s look back at the fundamentals of the first article, I would strongly recommend that you re-read the first article before you read this continuation.
Filomena Di Louise whose article about Grow ship in the Forbes magazine inspired me to write this article with my own perspective says “Growship redefines leadership as an ongoing process of becoming curious enough to explore, brave enough to change and humble enough to learn”. In my view we needed to create two main forces that create an ecosystem which nourishes a growship environment in the organisation that you lead. These were firstly organisation’s purpose clarity and culture alignment and secondly growship in action is about sustained self-evolution.
Now moving on to the next most critical stage. Fundamental must key steps you must take to evolve into a Growth mindset individual.
Self-evaluation and decision to raise the mindset bar
Since growship is literally the next level of leadership, it needs more effort than you have ever put to evolve into any other mindset. Therefore, you need to first do a real self-evaluation as an individual. What are your ambitions and career path? How far are you away from your career goals? Check out your physical and mental health and your fitness levels to take on this steep hill climb in your life. Don’t rush into this mindset, as if you are unable somehow to evolve into this mindset, it will leave you in a state of disappointment and de-motivation which will be a deterrent in your overall progress. However, once you decide to get into the framework of this growship mindset. There is no looking back as you move ahead, and stay ahead
Once you decide, how do you move forward?
As aeroplanes don’t just hit their ignition switch like cars and drive off, you too need to pause and prepare. With the mindset evolution as your destination check your capability gaps and work on them first. For example, if growship needs super tenacity – work on your own tenacity capability gaps. There are ample mental exercises you could adopt. Wellness adoption and hitting the gym to stay fit helps too. Another example, you will need to set more time aside as you will need to deliberately change and change deliberately. Therefore, you will need to squeeze time out of your normal schedule, which will need you to build capability for optimum time management. You will need at least a month to get completely tuned in for your quantum leap mindset to become a reality.
Dynamic measurement of progress and realignment
A growship mindset fosters innovation, creativity, agility, calm restlessness, curiosity and much more. You become the brightest star in the sky. This needs you to keep track of your evolution and measure its impact and progress visibly. As I have mentioned in my earlier articles, one of the most effective methods of measurement of feedback is to create at least one mindset buddy who is genuinely interested in your welfare and progress. In real life I have seen mutual progress buddies who actually help each other. Set up a periodical review to measure how far you have reached in your mindset evolution goals. Initially keep track of direction and then of course keep close watch of changes around you. Many are caught unaware as there are sudden changes in the organisation goals, your role, new competition or even a tragic personal incident.
Wish you every success in achieving and sustaining a growship mindset!
