You Can Only Master, What’s In Your Control

This is the 140th article in the column ‘Destination Mindset’. Mindset evolution is centred around positive change in the way we are wired so that we can do better in life and be better human beings. However, while we evolve and improve, these should be around what we can control. Trying to evolve and change positively in areas which we as human beings cannot control is like setting ourselves up for failure. Other than what’s in our control, we can adapt to any change as our body and mind is wired to accept change as the only concept.

What’s not in our control

As much as we cannot control the weather, traffic and politics and what happens in our lives today- there are many other elements of our life we cannot predict and make happen. For example, despite making the best-in-class efforts you can never guarantee outcomes. Similarly, the opinions of others, whether in your target audience or otherwise! Another element we cannot change is the past. This includes the mistakes you have made. Although you can learn much from your past and better your present/future. Whatever efforts you take, you cannot guarantee the time it will take for your efforts to bear fruits. There are many more but one more significant out of control aspect is how other people feel.

What we can control

The top of this list is your mindset! It’s about how your mind is set, after all. It’s not easy to change your mindset, but once you do with your own deliberate efforts, it stays set. We are enthusiastic goal setters but once you set your goals, you have the complete control on how they are achieved. Similarly we can control the attitude we have developed. Another important aspect of our life that we can control are the boundaries that we set for ourselves. Your focus and your efforts are also in your hands and you can improve them and take them to the level you feel is necessary. Kindness and empathy which are such important qualities today are in our own control too. Last but not the least your own valuable self-care is within your own control.

Bring positivity into your life

Maintain your integrity and values whatever the situation may be. Be brave, and confront your fears to grow. Transform into the leader you have always wanted to follow. Live up to the promises you make by fulfilling them. Create a circle around you of people who will support you. Use time wisely. Prioritise well. Carve your purpose carefully, make sure that you can achieve it and then let that purpose become the guiding light of all your actions and life list. Keep your goals always in sight. Achieve them with passion and best version efforts. Remain practical but speak positively to your own self and others. Believe in teamwork and practice it. Delete the words impossible and cannot from your own dictionary. Find a way, keep at it and overachieve.

Communicate what you do

Despite what you do to excel in what you can control, effective communication becomes key with your stakeholders, especially at work as for your colleagues and team, seeing is believing. Therefore create your own personal communication strategy and build credibility, belief and trust around your professional capability. Be clear in communicating your feelings and needs. Be concise in today’s fast moving world where time is always so scarce. You should be seen to be concrete about what you say, not just appear confident. Communication is never about how much you say but it’s about being understood.

Once you decide your direction in life, it’s important to align it with what we cannot control and what we can control. Also match our abilities needed to reach the direction you want to take.
