In an AI-driven world, classrooms must evolve from information delivery to spaces that build judgement, empathy, and critical thinking
But designing engaging lessons is only the beginning. The deeper challenge is sustaining thinking in a world shaped by AI and constant distraction.
Bring AI into the conversation, not just the syllabus
AI is already in your students’ pockets. We can either make it a shortcut around thinking or a catalyst for better thinking. Early classroom experiments with AI show a useful pattern: when students use tools like chatbots purely to retrieve answers, focus is shallow and short-lived; when they use them to interrogate ideas, to compare perspectives, test assumptions, or critique flawed outputs, they stay engaged longer and think harder.
Based on this insight, you can ask students to generate an AI answer, then work in groups to find errors, biases, or missing perspectives. Or, you can have them prompt AI for multiple viewpoints on a case, then decide which they’d back and why. Or, you may let them compare their own reasoning to the model’s and reflect on the differences. In these scenarios, AI becomes the starting point of curiosity, not the end of it. Students learn a skill that will matter in every AI-infused workplace: how to question the machine instead of outsourcing judgement to it.
Because every student is a human first
Students walk into the classroom with their family obligations, financial pressure, mental health challenges, and a nonstop stream of worrying news. While in class, these do not disappear. When these external demands compete with rigid academic expectations, performance drops.
Educators should acknowledge this human side to connect at a human level. This unlocks honest conversation about what blocks engagement. It doesn’t mean lowering standards but designing channels that are challenging and humane at the same time.
Leaders who do this create learning environments where students feel they matter as engaging humans, not just as receivers of information. That sense of mattering is one of the strongest predictors of persistence and effort in all walks of life, including college.
The bottom line for education leaders
If you lead an educational institution, you’re not only managing timetables and curricula; you’re setting the terms on which attention and curiosity are either protected or eroded. Policy decisions about devices, assessment, and AI tools all send a message about what you value. Done well, they can turn your classrooms into rare spaces where deep thinking still feels possible. Therefore, the takeaway for educators is straightforward.

- In course design, curiosity should drive performance, not sit on the sidelines as a “nice to have”.
- When it comes to AI, treat it as a partner in critical thinking, not an enemy to be banned.
Your learners’ future world will value and reward critical and sharp questions. Their tomorrow requires minds that focus on what matters and navigate technology without being consumed by it. Classrooms that cultivate curiosity in this direction today will produce such leaders tomorrow.
You may not be able to beat doomscrolling. But you can offer something more powerful: the experience of being fully engaged in ideas that actually matter — together, in classrooms.
