Why Gen Z Upgrades Only When Trust Is Served First

POSTED BY: Udit Joshi 12 November 2025

Here’s the paradox keeping CMOs up at night in 2025: Gen Z will skip the multiplex but drop three months’ savings on sneakers. They’ll eat instant noodles all week, then splurge on skincare backed by dermatologists. They’re cutting ruthlessly in some categories while trading up in others. Their deciding line isn’t price, features, or even brand heritage. It’s proof!

This generation researches premium purchases like they’re writing dissertations. Fourteen YouTube reviews, Reddit threads at 2 AM, group chat consultations. And only then they’ll walk into a store, already 80% decided, looking for one thing: confirmation that what the internet promised is actually true.

The masala ignited by the brands here is – Earned Indulgence. It’s about brands earning the right to ask for the premium by showcasing proof at every moment any doubt creeps in. When trust arrives before the transaction, the upgrade stops feeling like risk and starts feeling like respect. Earned Indulgence recognises that today’s Gen Z doesn’t just pay for products; they pay for peace of mind.

Reliance Jio is a textbook case. With affordable data it guaranteed connectivity, reliability, and reach everywhere, building consistent trust that opened millions of wallets. Lenskart, apart from selling frames at good prices, layered every purchase with testable tech tools, real influencer reviews, and a 3D Try-On experience. It triggered the upgrade from ‘cheap specs’ to ‘fashionable, trusted eyewear’.

By 2035, this cohort will command USD 1.8 trillion in direct spending power across India, which means that addressing Gen Z’s selective upgrade behavior is a blueprint for the next decade of consumer growth.

Why Gen Z Won’t Splurge Without Proof

This cohort grew up cynical and cautious. They saw financial meltdowns, political scandals, information overload and fake news. They watched millennials drown in student debt after being sold the ‘college equals success’ promise. They saw greenwashing, gaslighting and so much more. They’ve learned to replace blind faith with deep verification rituals. Freud would say this is the ego protecting itself against a superego (societal authority) that failed them repeatedly. This generation knows how to fight off regret and cognitive dissonance by stacking proof points and credibility. It’s not indecision. They stopped believing words and started demanding verification. This explains their research behavior.

How their user journey works

Their buying journey goes digital → social → physical. Discovery starts on Search and YouTube. 79% percent of India’s Gen Z uses these platforms daily as their primary research tool before any significant purchase. By chronically  browsing they build purchase cases. They’re looking for answers to specific doubts like battery cycles, return terms, problems post-purchase.

More than influencers, consideration shifts to creators and peer circles who are the real users showing real conditions. If someone they trust demonstrates the product working under pressure, the shortlist solidifies.

Closure happens in stores, where senses seal the decision. Touch the fabric. Test the weight. Confirm the warranty. Gen Z walks in already knowing what they want. When it matches their research, the premium purchase feels inevitable. When it doesn’t, they walk away.

Three Moves to Master the Masala

Marketers should acknowledge that Gen Z isn’t anti-premium; they’re pro-evidence. Brands that understand and operationalise this Earned Indulgence mindset will capture the bulk of India’s next trillion-dollar consumption wave.

  1. Own the search game
Understand top doubts: battery fears, return policies, real-life issues. Deliver crisp, unvarnished answers on Google & YouTube to become the go-to source. Data shows 93% of Gen Z find purchase confidence from YouTube content in India.
  2. Activate peer proof
Creators are gatekeepers. Invest in authentic user narratives; scripted ads don’t cut it anymore. Honest reviews, how-tos, and journey stories alleviate anxiety and convert dreamers into buyers.
  3. Pivot stores to proof zones
Stores don’t close sales; they verify claims. Let customers touch, test, and validate. Train teams to support, make policy visibility and ease of returns table stakes. In India’s rising hybrid shopping climate, this is the moment indulgence turns from aspiration to action.

In the end the brands need to embrace in their strategy that – Earned Indulgence is not entitlement, but earned merit. It’s the kitchen where loyalty simmers. It is a layered, consistent discipline of trust-building grounded in verification, transparency, and authentic connection.

Now, I am on the spot with today’s Masala Tikka. I must confess that even after an hour’s effort, which was apparently more difficult than preparing the article, I couldn’t find a joke that doesn’t irk any of the demographics. My recommendation, let’s decide to detox this week.
