Redefining Influence: The Unconventional Shifts in Indian Advertising and PR

POSTED BY: Dr. Ankoor Dasguupta 07 August 2025

In my observation, having spent more than 20 years in advertising and marketing, India’s advertising and public relations landscape has always thrived on its ability to adapt, but the past five years have been a crucible of transformation. While much has been said about digital adoption, influencer marketing, and the rise of regional content, there are deeper, less-discussed shifts that are quietly redefining the rules of engagement for brands and their leaders. For C-suite executives, understanding these trends isn’t merely a matter of staying updated—it’s about seizing the next growth opportunity and mitigating unseen risks.

Here I make an attempt to move beyond the conventional wisdom and explore 3 pivotal, yet unconventional, changes shaping Indian advertising and PR that every leader should have on their radar.

  1. The New Ethics of Attention: Purpose Over Performance

Five years ago, ad effectiveness was predominantly measured by performance metrics—reach, frequency, and ROI. Today, Indian audiences, especially the younger demographic, are demanding more than clever campaigns or catchy slogans. There’s a growing expectation for brands to exhibit authentic purpose, not just in messaging, but in action.

What’s changed?
Brands are now held to higher standards of accountability. Performative social campaigns are easily called out, and tokenism is swiftly punished by an increasingly vocal, digitally-empowered public. Consider the backlash some major FMCG and apparel brands faced for insincere social messaging during recent movements. The message is clear: Indian consumers are seeking brands that don’t just ‘talk the talk’ but ‘walk the walk’.

Implication for C-Suite
Leaders must ensure purpose and ethical practices are not just marketing tactics but embedded into the business DNA. PR and advertising teams must be given the mandate—and the freedom—to challenge internal narratives and call out potential missteps before they hit the public eye. This shift from performance-led to purpose-led communication demands deeper collaboration between marketing, HR, and the boardroom.

  1. From Influencer Economy to Creator Collaborations: The Rise of Co-Creation

Influencer marketing is old news. The real shift has been the evolution from transactional influencer partnerships to genuine co-creation with creators who are now treated as strategic partners—not just paid amplifiers.

What’s changed?
Indian creators are increasingly involved at the ideation stage, contributing directly to campaign concepts, product innovations, and even brand values. This is a far cry from the earlier model of simply handing out scripts or products for promotion. The most successful campaigns of the last couple of years have been those where creators provided cultural context, authentic storytelling, and feedback loops that guided brands in real-time

Look at how fintech and D2C brands have developed entire product lines and campaigns in tandem with creators, leveraging their audience insights and credibility. These collaborations often lead to content that’s native to platforms, nuanced in language, and genuinely resonant with target communities.

Implication for leaders
I’d say, leaders must reimagine partnerships—not as a media buy, but as a creative alliance. This means empowering teams to build long-term, value-based relationships with creators and integrating their input into core business decisions. The future belongs to brands that are willing to relinquish some creative control and embrace the messiness of true collaboration.

  1. The Emergence of Hyperlocal Trust Networks

One of the most overlooked but powerful developments is the rise of hyperlocal trust networks—micro-communities and local opinion leaders who shape brand narratives at the grassroots level.

What’s changed?
With the explosion of vernacular platforms, messaging apps, and local forums, the conversation has shifted from national campaigns to neighborhood-level advocacy. Brands that once relied on mass messaging now find that credibility and influence are built street by street, WhatsApp group by WhatsApp group.

For instance, during the pandemic, pharma and health-tech brands relied on thousands of micro-communities—from Resident Welfare Associations to local health volunteers—to disseminate vital information and build trust. Similarly, FMCG brands are increasingly activating ‘mom influencers’ and local store owners as brand ambassadors, rather than relying solely on celebrity spokespeople.

Implication for leaders
Leaders must rethink segmentation. Data-driven targeting is important, but so is investing in real relationships at the grassroots. PR and advertising strategies need to empower local teams, tap into community insights, and establish feedback mechanisms that catch issues before they escalate. Hyperlocal doesn’t just mean language translation—it’s about deep cultural relevance and sustained presence.

Reflection

The Indian advertising and PR ecosystem is in the midst of a profound recalibration. The new rules require brands to be authentic in purpose, collaborative in creation, and hyperlocal in trust-building. For the C-suite, these aren’t just trends—they are imperatives for resilience and relevance in the years to come. By embracing these unconventional shifts, leaders can future-proof their brands and foster deeper, more meaningful connections with the new Indian consumer.
