Telling India’s GCC Story: Shaping the Global Narrative

POSTED BY: Udit Joshi 18 September 2025

If you’ve been following India’s business story past few years, you’ve probably heard of Global Capability Centers (GCCs). GCCs are offshore hubs set up by multinational companies to drive operations, innovation, and digital transformation. India has quietly become the global leader here, housing more than 1,600 GCCs that employ over 1.7 million people. A recent NASSCOM report notes the sector’s growth is projected to cross $100 billion by 2030 and is fast approaching 5% of the GDP.

But what does this have to do with public relations and media?

On an average, the pink papers carry at least one GCC story every day. From their erstwhile image of a cost center; GCCs are becoming strategic centers of excellence. They are shaping innovation, talent, and culture for global brands. And as they gain visibility, and scale, their leaders are increasingly stepping into the spotlight to tell their stories. This is where they need the PR storytellers and communications experts to come in. PR can take the role of a Shaman guiding them on what to tell, whom to tell and how. Whether in form of news on development, participation in industry events, thought leadership content, podcasts with think-tanks, talent branding and many more innovative ways.

The Changing Reputation Landscape

For PR professionals, the GCCs bring an inflection point. Until recently, media coverage around them was limited to cost savings or scale. In the beginning of the year, I met the Head of Communications at a Fortune 500 GCC in Bangalore. Their frustration summed it up. “We’re building world-class solutions, but nobody knows our story.” Here was a global powerhouse, struggling for recognition. And this isn’t about vanity. Perception directly impacts talent attraction, global positioning, and even investment decisions. The narrative is gradually shifting toward their role in driving digital transformation, AI adoption, sustainability, and even learning and development (L&D). Some of the GCC leaders I’ve worked with, have transitioned from internal communicators to thought leaders, shaping industry conversations. Their inspiring stories place India on the world map as a hub of innovation and leadership. And these stories are real and abundant.

Trends Shaping GCC Storytelling Today

GCCs are shaping innovation, culture, and global business impact. Their work impacts markets worldwide, from digital transformation projects to patented solutions. Here are three key trends shaping how GCCs communicate their achievements:

  • Tier 2 Cities Rising: Coimbatore, Kochi, and Indore are welcoming new GCCs. Each launch allows PR to tell local stories of ambition and growth, while repositioning smaller cities as global innovation hubs.
  • Reverse Innovation: Indian teams are designing solutions for emerging markets that headquarters later adopt worldwide. That flips the traditional narrative of innovation flow.
  • Workplace Innovation: One GCC introduced “Innovation Fridays.” Within three months, a side project became a patented global solution. It’s richer than most corporate culture stories we’re used to.

This is where reputation becomes strategy. The PR Community should embrace this opportunity to highlight stories that reflect both local ambition and global impact.

  • Learn the ecosystem: It’s time to study how they are evolving, who the key players are, what sectors they represent, and how they contribute to India’s innovation narrative.
  • Build leader brands: GCC leaders often work behind the scenes. PR can help them step into thought leadership roles, positioning them as credible voices in technology, sustainability, and future-of-work conversations.
  • Shape the talent story: With India’s youth aspiring for meaningful careers, GCCs have a strong opportunity to position themselves as attractive employers. PR must craft narratives around culture, career growth, and impact.
  • Anticipate global conversations: Topics like AI ethics, cybersecurity, and green operations are on every GCC leader’s agenda. PR pros should connect these themes with global business discourse.

Public Relations has the power to turn the existing narrative. If India is the ‘back-office of the world,’ GCCs are becoming the ‘brain-centers.’

For PR and media professionals, this is a chance to tell stories that blend credibility with aspiration, showcasing India’s role in shaping the future of global business.

The GCC wave should be looked upon as an opportunity that is beyond new client wins. It’s about updating the reputation playbook. Those who lean in now will shape brand narratives, and the way the world sees India’s place in the global economy.
