Mindset self-audit- three easy steps

Hope 2024 is off to a flying start with you. Time is a precious perishable commodity which is why we humans always like to measure to measure how we use it. Days, months and years are but milestones for us to track time and make the most of it personally and professionally. While time gone by never comes back, there are two important facts in life that remain permanent. The first and most important fact is that life is limited and comes with its cycle of growth. From birth, to childhood, to youth, to adulthood, to silver years to death. The second important fact of life is that it changes constantly.

We are all naturally wired from birth. Our genes, upbringing and events of life shape our nature and behaviour. Mindset is literally how your mind is set. Each human being is born with talents and limitations and a mindset. We have spoken of various mindsets and traits in my previous articles. Given the two important facts of living that life & time are perishable, we need to get the most out of our efforts. Achieve sustained success and happiness.

Your mindset determines your success and productivity. The great news here is that your mindset is in your hands. With efforts you can change your mindset to suit your changing world and be ahead in your career and life. While you happily ride the wave of change with mindset reboots, do you know that you can actually audit your mindset with a good degree of accuracy? Here are three simple but effective steps for a self-audit of your mindset.

Be clear about the mindset that you have chosen to follow

Your targeted mindset is almost like a new software that you install in your computer. Each mindset comes with its own behaviour and reaction patterns. You could adopt a single mindset or a blended/hybrid mindset with a group of mindsets including a dominant mindset. There are a whole variety of mindsets. You just need to leaf through my column which has 95 articles till date. Some examples of effective mindsets include- Growth mindset, Chilled out mindset, Open mindset, Happy mindset, Patience mindset, Stress resistant mindset. There is a long list of distinct mindsets you can evolve to. Once you have chosen the blended mindset you want to follow, the easiest way to evolve to it is to create a list of dos and don’ts. Also, a road map for mindset change.

Create a mindset ‘change buddy’

There are times that we set out with great enthusiasm to climb a mountain to get to a particular cliff and we end up completely off course! Find an honest and genuine mindset ‘change buddy’. Share your mindset goals with this person without any hang-ups or egos. Use this mindset change buddy as your coach with a deep bond of trust. Start with your plan and listen to your mindset change buddy without criticism. For example, if this person tells you that you are too hard wired to achieve some of your mindset change goals, analyse and change course. Set up periodical frank review sessions with your mindset change buddy. Discuss your achievements and failures. Your mindset change buddy is like an airport control tower to an aircraft which needs to land.

Map reactions to your mindset change

You will see visible changes in the way people react to you when you change your mindset. Believe me, as an author of ‘Destination mindset’, I have observed this phenomenon very closely. And these response changes are only positive. Your ideas get better accepted, people get more comfortable around you and follow you. You need to observe these reaction changes very closely. The more positive these reactions are, the more effective your mindset change becomes. Otherwise, don’t waste time. Get back to the drawing board and restart. You are off course!
