Mindset engineering

Every journey needs a pause to review and reset. Mindset change is also one of them. When you decide to evolve to a new mindset to become a better version of yourself, the journey starts with making that change a mission, getting a change buddy and progressing relentlessly till you achieve a new mindset, with a new set of behaviour and responses. You fight your mind constantly as it fights the change you want to bring about in your mindset till you cross the finish line. You enjoy your fruits of labour through better and faster results in your road of life. Achieve better than before and reach your much deserved full potential.

However, change is the only constant (my favourite line) and progress is a continuous process. Once you reach your goal, you need to constantly reinvent and stay ahead. This is my 85th article in this column and as an author when I look back, I see 84 ways that you can change to become your best version. Just flip the pages in the portal and see the various mindsets that exist, and there are many more. Each mindset is a journey of positive transformation, but its impossible for you to adopt 84 mindsets! And the list will grow as I soon cross my 100th article in the near future.

What is ideal is to evolve to a blended mindset and then reboot and reset periodically. You need to personify a growth mindset. For this you need to master the art of ‘Mindset Engineering’. Here are three fundamental steps.

Mindset servicing

Like any appliance or automobile, did you know that your mindset also needs servicing? You need to hibernate for 24-48 hours, every 6 months somewhere where you are not disturbed and get into deep introspection. Plot your personal and professional achievements on a flipchart or on your computer with every ounce of focus that you have. See why you succeeded as well as analyse why you could not. This review should also include the mindsets you chose as well as what worked and what did not work for you. Then plot out your goals and ambitions for the next 6 months. Carefully choose the mindsets or performance vehicles you need to achieve them. Then, you are ready for the next step.

Mindset mapping

Carefully create your mindset plan. Take everything into account. Your new weaknesses, your health drawbacks, the stage of your aging process. Also do a self-capability audit. First start making the basic changes to boost your body and mind’s capabilities. Do you need to bring down your blood pressure or blood sugar to be more optimal? Do you need to get away for a few days on a dream vacation to recharge? Or start yoga or meditation to augment mental wellness. Map out these options and start your transformation. Learn new skills that make you sharper and smarter. Optimise your work life balance. Plan your mindset reboot and work your plan.

Action your re-engineered mindset

Set out again from a zone of comfort to a zone of discomfort. In a new journey armed to win. Follow your mindset map precisely and methodologically keeping course of your route. The most important part of this renewed journey is that you keep track of your progress. Any path written in stone misfires. Here you need to bring your flexible mindset into gear. We all know that there is no one who can predict the future. Your mindset mapping is only based on logical assumptions and postulates. You must respond to unforeseen developments and changes. Some examples include, new opportunities, unanticipated calamities, fresh emotional trauma and so on.

The essence of evolution is flexibility and adaptability. Mindset engineering is only a tool to be a step ahead in progress in the VUCA world we live in today.

“Every morning, we are born again. What we do today is what matters most.”  Buddha
