The ‘can do’ mindset

There are people and then there are people…

It is said that people who need people are the luckiest people in the world! The truth however is that in this world nothing happens without people in this world. There would be no one to buy products and services without people. We would not have clients; there would be no cycles of commerce or economic activity. Teams are made of people and life is made up of colleagues, associates, friends and family. Which again are made up of people, fruitful interactions and mutually beneficial transactions with people. People are at the core of all we do and how we do. Interface or interactions, are with people.

These very people form perceptions very quickly interacting with you. When you interact with your colleagues or customers- new or old they are always summing you up silently. “Is he knowledgeable?”, “Can I depend on her”, “Is he real or fake?”, “Oh she has an attitude”, “Oh he is sloppy”, these mental prompts keep on and on to accept you or reject you, to like you or dislike you. Your mindset creates your attitude and behavior and believe me people pick up negatives much faster than positives. Usually these quiet moments of truth form lifelong impressions. In business they form decisive perceptions and can either create long term lasting business partnerships or very short lived alliances.

What is a ‘Can do’ Mindset?

The mind works best when it’s left open. A ‘can do’ mindset is all about basically having an open mind. This kind of mind is the exact opposite of a rigid mindset and very different from a positive mindset too. Basically it’s a mindset where you transit from a no to a yes but with a caveat emptor that it meets your requirements especially in business.

Every business opportunity you would discuss is with a bent to objectively examine the transaction with what you want to achieve with mutual benefits. Normally when you are skeptical you create an invisible wall between you and the person you are interacting with, whether a prospective client or a colleague. And believe me; every human ‘chemistry’ is based on mutual trust and comfort. You do not change yourself to people please or become a reckless person. Just be open, positive and fair and you will see how a ‘Can do’ mindset benefits you positively.

How do you develop a ‘Can do’ mindset?

Any change takes effort and the change should become a natural part of you. People can see through pretence and faking something immediately sends very negative vibrations which can cause mistrust. So, if you are a hard core skeptic or are hard wired negative person by nature. Always tend to see the glass half empty, this mindset is definitely not for you.

Otherwise?

Increase your likability. Develop a calm, cordial and pleasant personality and an openness to discuss and interact. Does not take much effort to do. This does not mean that you are changing yourself to be a clown! It just means that people should feel good interacting with you and should look forward to meeting you again. In my experience, to add to this, if you add value in your interaction and create a good level of ‘returns on time spent’ it’s the actual cherry on the cake. By all means bringing your intellect and knowledge to the fore really creates a difference.

A ‘Can do attitude’ does not mean that you become a ‘yes man’ to your colleagues and especially to your seniors. Enthusiasm is a key in developing this mindset, and of course the committed energy to make the best happen in the benefit of your organisation. If you play any sport, especially team sports you will be surprised how a ‘Can do’ attitude works wonders. For you and the team!
