They say that the most progressive mindset for sustained success is a ‘Growth Mindset’. I have written about this earlier in this column. However, the first step to developing this mindset is to open your mind and evolve into a ‘Flexible Mindset’ which makes you an inclusive, real leader. How do you evolve into this magic mindset?
Rigidity is an impediment
While its great to stand by your own values and beliefs rigidity impairs progress and success. When you are rigid, you lose valuable opportunities to enhance your own growth. Flexibility is about being open rather than being closed minded. Instead of saying no, unbiasedly weigh the merits and de-merits of what someone suggests. If the suggestion or idea benefits the organisation or cause, be open to exploring it further. Accept the suggestion based on merit. Remember, you are not always right. A similar approach for your client/customer will benefit you immensely. Encourage inputs, get views and suggestions, it only bolsters the quality of your output. However, go with your experience and gut feel. Openness does not mean that you need to please everyone, harvest the best inputs, enrich and excel.
Say goodbye to your ego
As you know, most people dislike being proved wrong. Their ego prevents value add and learning. We live in the churn of change and evolution. Whether we like it or not, when the sun rises the next day, it’s a new world with new opportunities, especially with minute to minute change of technology. You have to reboot, relearn constantly to progress. Accepting change and re-learning needs a zero ego mindset. There are valuable learnings today from all ages and from juniors, leverage these learnings to your advantage. Letting go of your ego also has several benefits in your personal life. You will make more friends and lead a better life. Rigidity often leads to conflicts and stress. And stress has a huge negative impact on your health and wellness quotient.
Cool and composed
Normally people with a rigid mindset are impatient, have very little patience and a short fuse with their temper. The mantra for a ‘Flexible Mindset’ is being tolerant, patient and chilled out. Being rigid with goals and timelines set is acceptable but being rigid in almost everything you do will leave you isolated and unwanted. We work and operate much better in a conducive environment. Being an aggressive go getter does not mean being toxic and angry. People get defensive in reaction to such behaviour. If you do not have a cool and composed demeanour you tend to de-motivate and be self-destructive. You are neither liked and followed at work or home.
To develop a ‘Flexible Mindset’ you need to first take stock of your own mindset. Are you extremely rigid or moderately flexible? The more rigid you are, the more you need to work on your self and change. Evolution from one mindset to the other is not an easy process. But nothing is impossible. You just need to reset your mind to change your mindset!!
