Hey, watch out, I’m impulsive

We have been talking about acquiring new mindsets and letting go of our old mindsets to cope with change, uncertainty and new challenges and I have been able to bring to curate over 100 articles drawn from my observations and the teachings of life’s university in this esteemed professional publication. However much we change to become our best version, we are essentially hard wired about some things that we cannot rewire. These come from our genes and actually make us what we basically are known as. It is called human nature. We live our lives learning from the time we are born. We learn to walk, talk etc but essentially become the person we are through our core nature that we are born with.

Going forward in my column ‘Destination Mindset’ I am now going to look at some of these typical essential traits that a person may possess that dictate his nature. Therefore, his behaviour and functional style. I am hopeful that this curation becomes a catalyst of reflection and clears up the path ahead with increased consciousness and pre-emption. So, instead of changing what is almost impossible to change in you, you increase your self-awareness and therefore can reduce the negative impact your nature can bring to your family and professional.

The first such hard trait that most of us have is our impulsiveness. Although in life we have planned everything and have charted out a road map for ourselves, our family, our career and our job, we find ourselves suddenly changing course, just because we feel like. Even though we cannot change our behaviour, we can create wonders by changing impulse into gut feel! Here are some more things you can do.

Impulse is real freedom

Life is all about freedom and our soul yearns for such ‘free moments’. We know that we have an important presentation for our client next early morning and resolve to finish early the night before, sleep early to wake up fresh the next day but come 9pm, impulse kicks in. We put on our jeans, take some bottles, pick up our good friends and head out to the nearest beach. We sleep at 2am that too completely drunk and lost. The next morning, we get up, with a hangover and a headache!

You are saving up for a new car that have booked and them suddenly you get a call from Australia from a long-lost friend, inviting you and your wife for their wedding. All on the house excepting your travel! The car can wait. Impulse first!

Be impulsive but fuel your dreams and long-term goals too. A little self-control really helps!

Impulse is venting out

They say that human relations are the most important assets in your life. That’s why even employees are called human capital in organisations. Yes, today’s life where values have changed immensely relationships are only transactional. But still at the centre of human life, being cared for, being nurtured are all needed and are nourishing factors. Look back carefully in life and the negative moments of truth you would have faced with your near and dear ones or also past colleagues. See what you too must have inflicted in human relations. When you examine these moments carefully you will find that most of these moments happened because impulse drove them. We often misunderstand impulse as venting out.

The world comes around a full circle and today networking is your true bank balance professionally and given the immense mental health problems that surround us, controlling impulse is key.

See impulse from the other side of the fence

Positive and constructive impulse is the core of leveraging your own behaviour and actions to transform your progress. Develop gut feelings, let your impulse churn out new ideas and innovation. Let your impulse drive happiness and great mental health!
