Motivational books, videos, and seminars have become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly among young people and professionals. It’s almost like a trend now to seek out motivational content, with many regularly attending seminars led by famous speakers or watching inspiring videos online. While these resources can provide a quick boost of energy and excitement, they often don’t lead to the long-term results we hope for. Why is that?
The main reason, I believe, is that many of us consume motivational content without truly applying what we learn to our lives. It’s like knowing a math formula but not understanding how to use it or realising the benefits of doing so. When we read a motivational book or watch an inspiring video, we might feel a surge of enthusiasm, as though we could achieve all our goals in a single day. However, this burst of motivation, while powerful, is often short-lived. After a while, the excitement fades, and we slip back into our usual routines, seemingly unchanged.
This cycle happens because we often lack three critical qualities: Determination, Devotion, and Dedication—the “3Ds.” Without these, it’s challenging to turn the insights and advice we gain from motivational content into lasting change. We tend to look for motivation from external sources—books, videos, and seminars—hoping they will keep us on track. However, these are only temporary boosts. True and lasting motivation must come from within us, driven by our own desires and goals.
One of the main challenges is the difficulty in implementation. Putting new ideas into practice can be tough, especially at the beginning. Change is never easy. When we try to adopt new habits or attitudes, we often face resistance, both from within ourselves and from our environment. The excitement we feel after consuming motivational content can quickly wear off when we encounter the first signs of difficulty. This is why DETERMINATION is so important. We need to be willing to push through the initial challenges, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient.
DEVOTION is equally important. It’s not enough to simply want to change; we need to be fully committed to it. This means making the necessary sacrifices and staying focused on our goals, even when life gets in the way. Life is full of distractions and pressures—family responsibilities, work commitments, financial burdens, and even office politics—all of which can overwhelm us and make it hard to stay focused on our goals. These external pressures often pull us away from the lessons we’ve learned, making it easy to revert to our old ways. Devotion helps us stay on course, even when the journey gets tough.
DEDICATION, the third “D,” is about consistency. It’s about showing up every day, even when we don’t feel like it, and putting in the work. Motivation can get us started, but it’s dedication that keeps us going. Without it, we’re likely to give up as soon as the initial excitement wears off.
Simply reading motivational books or watching videos isn’t enough to create real change. To make a lasting impact, we must be self-motivated. This means cultivating the 3Ds— Determination, Devotion, and Dedication—in every aspect of our lives, no matter how small the task. When we approach motivational content not just as entertainment or a temporary source of energy, but as a blueprint for achieving our goals, we can unlock its full potential.
In conclusion, motivation should not just be something we seek from the outside. It should come from within, fuelled by our commitment to our goals. When we consistently apply the lessons we learn with determination, devotion, and dedication, we can achieve far more than we ever imagined. True change comes from within, and with the right mindset, we can make the most of the motivational content we consume and create lasting positive change in our lives.
