Untamed

The book has been like none other than those I have read before. It has unraveled a lot of thoughts that have been ingrained in us as women and helped me rationalise some of my own thoughts. Its left me untamed. UNTAMED is about how we got fenced by the world’s expectations of us, and how we break free. It is about how to reclaim yourself, love yourself, trust yourself and abandon others’ expectations so you can stop abandoning yourself.

The book is a memoir with grace spilled across the chapters. Glennon has managed to share simple and often forgotten life lessons, some those could be borrowed and used in our professional lives.

“ If you are uncomfortable— in deep pain, angry, yearning, confused— you don’t have a problem, you have a life. Being human is not hard because you’re doing it wrong, it’s hard because you’re doing it right. You will never change the fact that being human is hard, so you must change your idea that it was ever supposed to be easy.”

This quote has instilled in me a deep self-awareness that the emotions that we feel and undergo are supposed to be felt and experienced the way we do. It was never supposed to be any other way.

Some points that stayed with me after I put the book down:

  • Message for women and how they tend to get trapped in lives that aren’t REALLY who they are
  • Great message delivered anecdotally: how Abby coached their daughter through sport that sometimes you have to do hard things that you don’t want to do in order to get to what you DO want

The book is divided into chapters that tell the story of her life interwoven with gems of information coming straight from her life.

What I don’t like about the book:

  • The book gets repetitive at time, certain chapters can be concise
  • The chapters appear disjointed
  • Can sound preaching to the choir and a bit self-congratulatory

What I liked about the book:

  • Taught me a great deal around how to set boundaries, make peace with my body, and acknowledge my anger. I have used this to channel my energies and anxiety both in my personal and professional life
  • Anecdotal and shares balanced ideas borrowing from her own life; it makes it relatable

Well, the very quote at the start resonated with me and I knew this book will bring in a revolution within me:

“For every woman resurrecting herself
For girls who will never be buried.”

Go grab a copy and embark on the journey to your untamed self.
